| Good phone for web surfing. Hard to figure out. | Rating: 4 |
I bought this phone primarily for its fast internet connection. This aspect of the phone is great. Most pages take only a few seconds to come up and though I haven't been able to figure out all the Blackberry stuff, my Yahoo email account is only a few key strokes away. The modem feature of the phone was also a big selling point for me. Unfortunately, after spending two hours trying to figure this feature out, I haven't been able to connect my laptop to the net using it. From what I've been able to gather from blog comments, this feature is either not compatable through Cingular (which would make it a distinctly odd choice on a cingular phone) or you have to go and buy special blue tooth, infrared, or other hardware to support this function.
Regarding the rest of the phone's features I am likewise divided. The size, though larger than comparable PDA's, has proven small enough to still be managable. There is no vibrate option on the phone which royally sucks when you're listening to your Ipod and waiting on a call at the same time. The keyboard is very usable and large and the screen is great.
Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase (though I wish I'd waited a few days/weeks to get a better deal on the price. The $20/mo unlimited web surfing was the kicker. At $60/mo Verizon could hardly compare. |
| A very good cell phone, but... | Rating: 5 |
This is a very good cell phone and Amazon.com gives the best deal. But, you can't transfer your old phone number from different provider to Cingular through Amazon.com. If you transfer your old phone number, you won't get your rebate. Please read amazon.com rebate rules carefully!!!
You can read about how to transfer your number through this link : http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/feature/-/508597/102-6686881-6992121 |
| Great progress by Nokia, but still not quite there yet | Rating: 3 |
This phone is in a long line of progress of Nokia's "Communicator" series, and it certainly has come a long way to serve that purpose. The upcoming 9300i, which will have a built-in Wifi (802.11g), should enhance it even further.
I don't really use it often enough to qualify to write a full fledge review -- it is provided by work but I use my trusty old 6800 most of the time instead. Fortunately, "Adrian" of West Hollywood has provided an excellent review. I will just fill in some additional details and comments.
- The latest PC Suite, along with your bluetooth adapter, will allow you to use the 9300 as a wireless modem for your laptop nearly instantly. Just select the provider profile (Cingular) and almost no other configurations are needed.
- As with all other Nokia Communicators, 9300 still uses MMC cards. This is a MAJOR BUMMER as SD cards are far more prevalent and inexpensive at a higher capacity.
- Realplayer works well but ... it's Realplayer. Seriously, it'd be nice to be able to play a lot more video formats. On the other hand, few (if any) other devices can claim RTSP playback right out of the box.
- The build is as expected of all Nokia phones, durable. Not that you'd want to, but I've dropped it by accident and still works good as new.
- The "mouse" works well for pointer movements but is very prone to accidental clicking. The one used on the 9500 is much better.
- Finally, the biggest problem for me in addition to lacking a vibrate mode, is the keyboard. While the 9300 sits naturally in your palms for some thumb action, the keyboard itself provides almost zero tactile feedback. This may not be an issue for some people, but I type fast and a good responsive keyboard is critical to me. Yes, I do type a lot on mobile devices. |
