Motorola PEBL
Rated 3.5 out of 5 Motorola's PEBL U6 is the second model in Motorola's high-end four-letter word line, following the super popular RAZR V3. The PEBL takes some of the same materials and technologies used in the RAZR and packages them into a completely different kind of clamshell handset. While the RAZR is all about thin, sharp angles, the PEBL is more about design, making use of soft curves and smooth lines throughout. The graphite black finish on the smooth, rounded exterior of the PEBL U6 manages to very glossy while still having a visual texture to it. The effect is very cool in person, but the downside is that the phone is an absolute magnet for finger prints. But that's just the cost of high fashion, isn't it? The PEBL's biggest claim to fame is perhaps not its shape and look, but its unique opening mechanism. A series of custom hinges, a dampening device, and some magnets allow the PEBL U6 to be opened up one-handed in a very smooth, elegant manner. When holding the device, you simply use your thumb to pull the top cover towards the bottom of the device a bit, which releases the magnetic latch that keeps the spring-loaded opening mechanism at bay. At that point you simply move your thumb out of the way and let the spring do its job. The motion is smooth and slow enough not to cause the device to become unbalanced. Once open, the PEBL's unusual keypad is ready for use. The directional controller and its center select button are very typical of mobile phones, but the rest of the keypad builds on some of the design elements we saw in the RAZR's keypad. The PEBL's keypad and softkeys are completely flat. The actual buttons are hidden behind a single sheet of metal that has a bit of give to it, allowing finger pressure to make its way to the switches underneath. Thin strips of translucent material let light filter in from behind, just as they do on the RAZR's keypad. The net result is a very distinct-looking keypad that probably sacrifices a bit too much in the name of fashion. Individual keys are simply much easier to find and press, even if they don't look nearly as sharp. The inner workings of the PEBL U6 seem to be stock Motorola. The handset comes in two variations, each of which supports three GSM frequency bands and EDGE data. The North American version supports the 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 Mhz bands. The internal display is a 262k-color unit with a pixel resolution of 176x220. The battery should be good for over 6 and a half hours of talk time, or up to as long as 10 days of standby time according to Motorola. Bluetooth support more than makes up for a lack of infrared connectivity. The only aspect that seems a bit dated is the PEBL's VGA camera. For a high-end handset like the PEBL, you certainly would expect more resolution in the camera, at least it's capable of recording MPEG4 video clips. Other highlights include 5 MB of internal storage that can be used for MP3 or MIDI ringtones, photos and video clips, and downloaded Java games and applications. The addition of speaker-independent voice dialing and voice commands is welcome, and the PEBL's relatively low weight of 3.7 ounces (110 g) makes it quite pocketable.
Features of Motorola PEBL:
- bluetooth phones
- camera phones
- class 2 bluetooth technology - connect to pcs, headsets and other devices wirelessly via bluetooth®
- external display with elegant clock
- integrated digital vga camera with 4 x digital zoom and light
- speaker independent speech recognition
- video capture and playback

Hi,
I have to be honest, at 300$ this phone is something to think about before buying. I did my online research and decided to get it and I would say I'm really impressed. I had a Motorola V600 before, which in many ways is similar to Pebl in functions. Pebl just simply blows all other phones by its unique pebl shape, its rubbery smooth feel, one hand opening mechanism and size.
I use my cellular phone only for making calls, texting, Instant messaging and for emails (via T-zones) and this phone does all that for me, and with its great design it always looks good to be doing any of the above.
Pros:
1. Excellent design. Looks and feel like a fine pebble.
2. Reasonably light weight and small.
3. Excellent Razr like soft key pad.
4. One hand unique opening system.
5. Having yahoo, AOL and ICQ messengers (beating V600 in that area).
Cons:
1. Basic functionality, no MP3 player, no megapixel camera (however these mean nothing to me, as I use other devices for these functions).
2. Relatively weak vibrator buzz, compared to V600.
Overall I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend this to anyone, who wants to have a stylish cellular. |

| i have had the pebl since march. have had 3 replacement batteries and 2 new handsets sent to me. the battery life is terrible. aside from how it looks, which is good, and its opening feature, very cool, the phone is junk. DON't get suckered like i did. paid $150 for junk. |
| Stylish, but not a great phone... | Rating: 3 |
I got this phone free, but returned it... it looks stylish, but its buttons are hard to press AND if your credit card gets near its magnetic strip, it will wipe it out (it even says so when you open the package, wish it would have said that on the page when I bought it!). The outside gets smudges on it every time you touch it. It took forever to enter in my contact list, and the menus aren't as user friendly as other phones I've had.
If you are going for look, then this is the phone for you. For functionality, then I'd go with another choice.
P.S. I only returned it because the service didn't work, I would have kept the phone if the service would have been better! |

| Great phone despite the skeptics. | Rating: 5 |
Well at first i was a little hesitant to purchase the pebl, but it definately changed my mind when I finally did get it. It had everything I was looking for plus some more goodies. It keeps many of the good things about older motorolas while improving on many new things and giving you a decent bluetooth phone. It still uses the basic motorola layout and keypad but also adds 2 new buttons that are your messages and internet, which is great because it frees up the other buttons for new things that you use. Also I like how they improved some things compared to the older and cheaper models like a fully functional calculator that you can actually use, new features in the messaging that helps prevent you from messing up, and a better design for the actual phone. It also gets good reception pretty much everywhere. The graphics are good, it has good sound with the speaker phone and ringtones. Also, it has a great voice calling feature that you don't have to program to use. It takes a little getting used to but you get it soon enough. It doesn't like real compilicated names though. I like the opening hinge it uses because it is easy to use. Takes a minute to catch on but seems super easy once you got it. Only thing I don't like about is you really need to be careful where you put you finger its easy to pinch it. It has good battery life but im not thrilled with the charger port being on top. Also it only uses one port which can be good or bad. Just depends on how you use it. The only other thing I can think of that I don't like is how easy it seems too get dirty. I'm contantly having to wipe it down to keep it clean and looking good.
So in the short version:
Pros: Everything you need for a good phone, cool new design, innovative opening hinge, has bluetooth, good voice-activated calling, fixes a lot of the annoying motorola applications, good sound, nice graphics , decent camera.
Cons: Must be wiped down daily ( easy to do though, can do with a shirt your wearing) , single port for charging and accessories, voice calling can be tricky at first.
Overall this is a great phone, I love it. Its cool and functional.
Its great once you figure out how to use everything you just have to give it a chance. Reading the manual will save you a lot of time.
Its worth buying.

| This is a very sexy phone. Once you master opening of the case one handed (it takes a while) it will send you back to watching the "original" Star Trek, I am often tempted to reply "beam me up". The black coating seems to be magic as any marks and scratches just disappear. EVERYBODY has a RAZR be different get yourself a PEBL. |
