HP iPAQ 6515

Wireless/Mobile Phone/Cell Phone
HP iPAQ 6515

If you want one device to do it all, the quad-band HP iPAQ hw6515 deserves a serious look. Key features include Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC (second edition), EDGE high-speed data support, a 312 MHz Intel xScale processor, 55 MB of RAM, Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel camera, and a 240 x 240 color touch screen. When coupled with a Cingular data plan, this little number makes a powerful mobile office.

Design
With a full QWERTY thumb board just below the screen and plenty of keys for your favorite functions and applications, the hw6515 is designed for ease of use. You'll enjoy fast access to your Outlook calendar, contacts, and key phone functions. Alternatively, the device can be directly controlled with an included stylus that slides out of the case. A SecureDigital (SD) card slot is provided, allowing you to expand memory to your needs. The slot is also SDIO capable, meaning it supports peripherals such as wireless LAN (wi-fi) cards. The hw6515's TFT display supports up to 65,000 colors and the Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC operating system is completely touchscreen-enabled. The screen also features advanced handwriting recognition that is compatible with all of the device's applications. The rear of the unit houses the camera and there's a standard stereo 2.5mm headset jack, while USB data and charging is handled by docking ports on the bottom of the device.

Calling Features
Many of the hw6515's calling features are integrated with the Windows Mobile operating system. For instance, the included Pocket Outlook software features a contacts list that is cleverly combined with the phone's dialing functions. Meanwhile, the phone's handwriting recognition software can be used to dial numbers and enter contact information. The hw6515's built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Polyphonic ringtones are available, as is a vibrating alert. Custom ringtones, as well as a picture ID system are also supported. Lastly, the device's Bluetooth (version 1.2) connectivity makes it easy to sync the unit with a wide range of handsfree, wireless headsets and car kits.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The hw6515 is designed as a complete mobile office solution, so Internet and messaging capabilities are robust. The unit comes packed with pocket versions of Outlook and Internet Explorer. Instant messaging via AOL, Yahoo!, and ICQ is also supported. In addition to keeping track of contacts, Pocket Outlook features integrated calendar and email functions. Microsoft's ActiveSync software keeps the device synced with all of your PC's Outlook information (via USB, IR, or Bluetooth connection). Users who want Internet connectivity on the road with their laptop or PDA can tap the unit's wireless modem capabilities (Cingular data plan charges apply). In addition to Outlook/Exchange Server email connectivity, the hw6515 also supports POP3 and IMAP4 email protocols. The unit fully supports basic text messaging, as well as multimedia messaging (MMS).

A generous toolset ships with the hw5615's Windows Mobile 2003 software. Pocket Outlook includes to-do lists while pocket versions of Word and Excel are included so you can review and edit documents on the go. A calculator, alarm clock and voice memo recorder round out the tools package.

Imaging and Entertainment
Using the hw6515's integrated media functions, you can store digital music files and easily exchange them with your PC. The included Windows Media Player 10 application can also play videos for even more mobile entertainment. Meanwhile, you can use the device's 1.3 megapixel (1280 x 1024) camera to capture photos or videos. The camera features an LED flash, as well as self timer and white balance functions. Gaming on the device is also fully supported.

Reviews:

No technical assistence for when it doesn't work.Rating: 1
Read carefully the review from Mexico and those regarding lack of adequate technical assistence either from HP or from service providers. This is a great product...until it doesn't work and then you may as well throw it away.

Like the reviewer in Mexico, I have an IPAQ that does not always work as a telephone. In my case, I bought the hw6515 in Europe where I live. Works wonderfully except when I come to the US where the phone does not work at all. HP tech assistence, over a series of months of attempts to get them to correct or at least acknowledge the problem, would blame my telecom service provider. I use the exact same SIM card that worked in my IPAQ 6340 in the US and this same SIM card works in other tri-band phones in the US--so it clearly is not a problem of the telecom service provider.

As with other reviewers, I found the HP tech assistance in both the US and in Europe to be incompetent. They don't know their product. Their initial response is ALWAYS to blame the service provider. They will open a case but when they cannot resolve the problem they will just close the case. The incompetnce gets to the absurd level of one tech assistant asking me what language they speak in Italy!

You will find the hw6515 to be great, really great......if yours does not have a problem. If it does have a problem, though, get ready to just throw it away after countless hours of trying to deal with incompetent tech support from HP.

Yes, this review is partly a venting of frustration but it also serves as a warning for anyone considering this product. There are other options out there in the market place so consider the short battery life, the difficulty of using the 6515's GPS, the telephone problems mentioned in my and other's reviews and, above all, the totally incompetent HP tech assistance.
Hard working little machineRating: 4
This is my second pda/phone device. I obtained this device because my "baby" the "love" of my life that now has become my "ex"dropped me by resetting itself constantly. Either it was in a "loop" or I could tap a number on the screen and it would reset. It happened so much that I actually became used to it! The one thing that I couldn't get used to was that certain people I would call I could hear them but, they couldn't hear me. Frustrating! I researched and found this is a known problem with the Treo 650 not a network failure. This was told to me by a palm representative. Not to mention that I had bragged to EVERYONE I have the Treo 650! Well that's all water under the bridge now I have the Hp Ipaq 6515. It's a great device so far! Eveything I need in a pocket pc. I won't bore you with the specifics of the device. I'm sure you have read all about the features. I was reading the reviews for the device and I wanted to shed a little light on some of the comments that were made regarding the service and device. One comment was "The system crashed all the time as I was using a lot of running programs' memory and the phone simultaneously." Well I would expect that it's not a desktop or laptop computer it's a pocket pc. Another comment made was that "Cingular (the official provider) will give you a hell of time if something goes wrong or breaks and all you want is just to exchange it. They will ONLY send a refurbished phone, even if a brand new one was purchased. 3/4 of Cingular Customer Service don't know what GPS is and will give you a forever runaround." This was NOT true with my experience. I called palmone and I ended up helping them find what the issue was with my 1st Treo650! Cingular also has set up a dedicated department for blackberry and pda/phone support you can also go to the website and get information there as well Cingular's return policy is this..If you have purchased a new device and it goes bad for whatever reason is to send you out a refurbished model. The unit was new when you purchased it of course..however you did use it. Therefore it is no longer new. So why would you get a new device for sending in your used device? Ok. Now here's a little more info for you. If you send your device back (ANY) cellphone or pda/phone with Cingular... three times, the policy is to get you a TOTALLY different device. I know for a fact because I did it with my Treo 650. Also if it's your first time and you have a great deal of problems with a device if you ask to speak to a supervisor at Xchange by mail (XBM) at Cingular and tell them you no longer want this type of device.. usually as a courtesy for your inconvience they will bypass the "three times" rule and send you out another device from the same category or higher if available. Please don't get me wrong customer service is backwards sometimes...well alot of times they get on my nerves and I work with them..but, I've dealt with just about EVERY cellphone provider in this country and Canada as well. And trust me if you knew the inside information of how these companies work the way I do you wouldn't think Cingular is that bad. Nothing in life is 100% perfect (hence the 4 stars) no matter how much you pay for it or how much you love it or how much you want it. All companies have issues and work your last nerve. I should know because I had a love affair with a Treo 650 that didn't really love me back. I hope this helped.
Its the only pda with gps....Rating: 5
Well.....
HP is currently the only one to offer a PDA Phone with gps.
Wifi is optional....checkout the spectec card....its pretty small...but it still sticks out about a centimeter....

GPS software is so so...
NOTE: The GPS reciever is on COM: 7.

Battery life could be better...its pretty good when the phone is in standby though.....

The 6715(the phone with built in WIFI, +100 MHZ proc, and WM5) is already out in europe under the name 6915.

The 6915 is NOT an improvement.
Things that are new in 6915
Built-in Wifi
WM5
~400 mhz processor

The battery is the same.
Built-in Wifi is mediocre to bad....your better off with a spectec card.
Why the ~400 mhz processor in the 6915? As with all windows....you need a faster processor....
Same is true here. For WM5 to run as fast a WM2003SE on the 6515, you need a faster processor.
Unfortunately, HP still uses the same capacity battery.
The battery life is less because of the faster processor.

You only get a 1200mah battery with this phone, which is mediocre...unless...when you use the gps in the car..you plug it in. The 1200mah with the 6915 is a joke, especially with WM5, and the faster proc.
Also, the WM5 on the 6915 still runs slower than WM2003SE on the 6515.
